The great apes

The seven living species of the family Hominidae, including our own.

About this list

Hominidae was once reserved for humans alone, with the other great apes placed in a separate family Pongidae. That arrangement did not survive molecular systematics: chimpanzees and bonobos are more closely related to humans than either is to gorillas, which makes the old "great apes" grouping paraphyletic unless humans are included in it.

Every non-human species on this list is Endangered or Critically Endangered. The eighth great ape is the one reading this.
