About this list
Hominidae was once reserved for humans alone, with the other great apes placed in a separate family Pongidae. That arrangement did not survive molecular systematics: chimpanzees and bonobos are more closely related to humans than either is to gorillas, which makes the old "great apes" grouping paraphyletic unless humans are included in it.
Every non-human species on this list is Endangered or Critically Endangered. The eighth great ape is the one reading this.
